Though LG TV announced to play MKV, MPEG-1, MPEG2, MPEG-4, DivX, Xvid video files via USB drive or network; sometimes we still encounter cannot play those kind of video files on LG OLED/4K/3D/LED/LCD TV. Let alone to play LG TV unsupported video format like WMV, FLV, Tivo, VOB, MOV, ASF, WTV, MXF, MTS, AVCHD, RMVB, WebM, OGV and etc. That's because one video format are composed of diversified codecs, taking MP4 format as an example, MP4 format includes codecs like Divx, Xvid, H.264, H.265, MPEG4, VP6, etc, but only videos in MP4 format with H.264 are supported by most LG TV, so are AVCHD, MKV, AVI or WMV formats.
I always recommend that you check the requirements, specifications and compatibility of your particular device and the USB drives - your user manual usually has that info. There are a few tips / suggestions we have as far as USB devices/drives go:
try using a USB device that does not require any external power or anything higher than the standard voltage / amperage (0.5A) - if you use one that requires external power, make sure to connect it to its power source;
plug the USB drive directly - DO NOT use a hub or extension / cables;
have the USB drive formatted to FAT32.
I've also seen some TV models that have multiple USB ports as well - and sometimes video playback only works from one of them.
In your case, looking at your particular model's owners manual there is no mention at all of video playback on the USB port, only Music and Pictures... as a matter of fact I did not find any mention about DivX on the manual at all - so your model most likely is not DivX Certified. You can find a link to the PDF of the manual halfway on this page.
Maybe someone will recommend installing DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance®) instead of USB to play MP4, MKV, AVI, MOV, WMV, etc. on LG TV. But many DLNA users find that even if with the installation of DLNA at the expensive price, LG TV still won't play MP4, AVI, etc. via DLNA servers or they can just play part of MP4, AVI, etc. And some older models of LG TV can't support to install DLNA.
